What’s Ahead in 2025: Overcoming Optics Supply Chain Challenges

As we enter the second half of 2025, tariffs and policy changes are increasing the focus on supply chain resiliency. Optical components play a critical role in systems; optical component delays can cost a company in lost revenue and customer dissatisfaction, and component replacement can impact profit margin and increase regulatory burden.

Ross Optical is committed to navigating these changes and ensuring our customers receive the best possible service and products. To mitigate supply chain risk, many of our customers are pursuing strategies like:

  • Optimizing Orders Across Multiple Suppliers
  • Increasing Optical Inventory to Minimize Potential Tariff Impact

Optimizing Orders Across Multiple Suppliers

Several recent projects have seen new companies “spreading the risk around” by using multiple vendors on a program to diversify risk. This approach helps mitigate potential disruptions and ensures a more stable supply chain.

This strategy ensures that orders can be moved, if needed, to meet delivery timelines and requirements. At Ross, we work with a number of vetted suppliers to achieve this, and we always conduct a site visit and first-article inspection with every supplier to ensure the product meets quality standards before continuing with larger orders.

Ross is committed to being a flexible and responsive supply chain partner. You can count on:

  • Blanket order philosophy—we’ll work with you to meet your changing inventory needs
  • Reliable, cost-effective sourcing—from prototype quantities to hundreds of thousands a year

Increasing Optical Inventory to Minimize Potential Tariff Impact

As trade negotiations are ongoing, the U.S. government has currently agreed to suspend all but the existing baseline tariffs for 90 days until mid-August. Many customers are pulling ahead orders to ensure delivery within this window.

Ross Optical is working to meet customers’ needs and timelines by:

  • Quick quoting for all new projects
  • Stocking a wide variety of catalog optics, in-stock and tariff-free

Many of our catalog optics are in stock, available to ship in days, not weeks, and are not subjected to tariffs, providing a significant advantage in the current trade environment. We have expanded our catalog to include a wide range of popular optics that are ready to be coated to your specifications. Three popular categories include:

      • Plano Convex and Achromats: These best-selling optics are essential for various applications, including medical devices, imaging, electro-optical, etc., and are readily available.
      • Large Optics: We have many large optics in stock, including our most popular 150 mm diameter, 1000 mm focal length optic. On this optic alone, we have done 20 different coatings, suiting a wide variety of applications.
      • Micro Optics: Our micro optics, including the Micro Plano Convex and Micro Plano Concave series, are also in stock and ready for immediate use.
