After earning her Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering, Clara Olivas started working in quality inspection across industries. She has served as a backbone at Ross Optical for the last three years, strengthening the quality management system to minimize errors and streamline efficient handling of customer needs. 

From internal audits and calibrations to supplier sourcing, part approvals, and corrective actions, she is the go-to person to ensure quality processes are not only streamlined but optimized.

Q&A with Clara Olivas

Tell me about your work at Ross Optical.

As Quality Engineer, I play an instrumental role in monitoring and evaluating the quality systems in place and ensuring that every aspect of our operations meets regulatory and quality standards as well as customer specifications.

I started at Ross three years ago. Prior to that, I was a Quality Engineer at a metal stamping company, but I felt that I needed something new in a new industry. I love that the optics industry can be complicated but also very interesting.

What’s a “day-in-the-life” look like for you?

I spend the bulk of my time assessing our processes and coming up with ways to improve them to make our projects and operations run more smoothly.

This involves modifying documents for approval, reviewing metrics, and leading external audits. The focus is more on Quality Systems rather than Quality Controls. 

What do you wish customers knew about Ross Optical?

Customer satisfaction is always top of mind for the employees of Ross. From sales to production, inspection, and all the way to shipping, we are all dedicated to building positive customer satisfaction.

We actively monitor our processes and immediately flag any errors. All products are handled with special care and leadership is always encouraging attention to detail among the team. 

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part is working with a fun group of people who always bring laughter and good vibes to the workplace. It’s also amazing to see all the places our lenses go, such as microscopes, cell phones, etc.

And in my role, receiving positive feedback from the customer satisfaction survey results or during audits is always very rewarding.

What’s one fun fact about you outside of work?

One of my dream vacations is visiting Hobbiton, the movie set where The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit were filmed. My husband and I are big fans, and we have a tradition of watching both trilogies once a year.
