Meet the team: Erika Salayandia

Erika joined Ross Optical in 2010. Starting in the Quality Department and then
transitioning into the role of Operations Manager showcases her adaptability and
expertise in ensuring quality and efficiency throughout the production process. Her roles
undoubtedly contribute to the company's success and reputation for excellence in the
industry.

What is your professional background?
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering and a Master’s degree in
Manufacturing Engineering with specialization in production systems and design of
manufacturing processes, as well as Six Sigma Green Belt and ISO 9001 auditor
certifications. My previous work experience is in the automotive industry, particularly in
the areas of industrial engineering and new business management.

What brought you to Ross?
They were looking for a person to develop the quality management system and obtain ISO
9001 certification. Fresh out of my Master’s program, I was eager to expand my expertise
in the quality area. I had the opportunity to build the entire system, simultaneously
acquainting myself with a product that was unfamiliar to me.

Can you describe your role at Ross?
As Operations Manager, I am responsible for overseeing the operations and processes
within the organization. I play a key role in various critical activities, ranging from
coordinating production schedules to maintaining quality standards and overseeing
shipping, all within strict timelines. Additionally, I engage in daily communication with
different departments and frequently interact with both vendors and customers.

Can you share a particularly interesting project you've worked on recently?
I recall working on a project for a defense client where the part tolerances were
exceedingly precise, and we needed to measure certain characteristics for the first time.
Through ongoing communication with both the customer and vendors, we managed to
bring the project to a successful conclusion.

What challenges or questions do you address for customers?
Our sales team primarily manages customer communication, yet sometimes, I
communicate with them concerning quality specifications, inspection reports, quality
issues and product status updates.

What trends do you see in the market?
There has been a growing demand for micro-optics due to technological advancements,
particularly in areas such as optical fiber transmission, medical devices, sensing systems
and visualization devices.

What project are you most proud of at Ross?
I don’t have a particular project I am proud of; instead, I take pride in my team. We have
an incredible group of people with a range of skills that complement well. Collaboratively,
we have tackled challenging projects under tight deadlines, consistently delivering
customer satisfaction. This is evident from the positive feedback we always receive in
our annual surveys.

What is your favorite part of working at Ross?
I particularly enjoy the diverse range of tasks within my role. From overseeing production
planning and scheduling to ensuring quality, managing shipping, and providing training,
there is always something different to focus on. Additionally, working with a wide array of
products keeps things stimulating. This dynamic environment ensures that boredom is
never an issue. The optical industry, especially at Ross, offers endless learning
opportunities. Furthermore, the constant communication with various departments,
vendors, and customers adds an extra layer of interest to my work.

What is something that people might not know about you?
I enjoy spending time with my family, particularly my two wonderful kids who brighten my
days. In my few quiet times, I like reading. To unwind and reduce stress, I engage in
exercise. I started practicing judo about a year ago. This is a passion I share with my
daughter. She claims she will achieve her black belt before me, and I am confident that will
happen.
